Look Beyond Photography: Episode 17 “Take the Good with the Bad”

It’s a harsh reality, but in this life we have things that are good and things that are bad…and more often than not, you can’t have one without the other.

When I was a kid, we used to watch the TV show “The Facts of Life”, whose theme song went a little something like “You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have, the facts of life.”  I know, I just dated myself and some of you have never even heard of The Facts of Life…for the rest of you, thank me later for getting that song stuck in your head all day!  Who would’ve ever thought there would be so much truth in a corny sit-com theme song?  But, this is a reality.  In this life we have to take the good with the bad…it’s simply a fact of life!

As a photographer, I’m reminded of this often.  I absolutely love photography and lighting and the creative process…but I loathe taxes and filings and correspondence and everything related to actually having a photography business.  What is most frustrating is that the two are inseparable.  For everything that I love about my work there is something I hate just as much.  I know that everyone reading this can totally relate.  We’re all looking for ways to take the good in life but leave out the bad.

So what is the solution to the stress and anxiety that comes from the bad things in life?  Well, I believe it’s all in our focus.  When we choose to focus on the good, or focus on the bad, life can look very different.  It reminds me of a Bible verse:

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”  Phillipians 4:8

Is it any wonder the writer tells us to focus and think about the good things in life?  If we want to be happy, we have to deal with the bad, but think on the good.  We can’t ignore the bad situations and hope they’ll just go away, but we don’t have to let them consume our life.

Maybe you’re like me and just feeling a little stressed out today, thinking about the bad parts of your business and getting bummed out.  Well let’s think about the parts that we love for a bit and concentrate on some of the good things in life.  You’ll be amazed how your mood changes…and it’s always easier to face the bad things in life when you’re in a good mood!
